Veolia has been awarded an extended two-year operations and maintenance contract for the industrial wastewater treatment plant of SipChem's (Saudi International Petrochemical Company) Acetyls Complex in Saudi Arabia.

Established in 1999, SipChem specialises in the production of basic and intermediate chemicals used to manufacture a multitude of products.

Veolia had earlier been awarded a five-year contract for operation and maintenance of the SipChem plant in 2009.

The two-year renewal of the contract represents an estimated total turnover of $2.6mn.

Frederic Fleury, CEO, Veolia Saudi Arabia, said: "We are delighted that SipChem have decided to renew this contract. We have remained committed to this project and together celebrate success in what we have achieved to date.

"The renewal of the contract is a testimony of our commitment to delivering integrated design solutions for water and waste water treatment, placing us at the centre of the circular economy.”

Ahmad A. Al-Ohali, CEO, SipChem, added: “Since the launch of the project in 2009, Veolia have worked effortlessly to create an environment in which our products and services can be produced efficiently. This relationship is crucial to the success of this project, as Saudi Arabia seeks to invest further in an expansion plan in petrochemicals and chemicals.

"It is important we become less dependent on crude revenues alone and realise the importance of processing energy resources, the operation of the acetyl complex is key to this process.”

As per the contract, Veolia will continue to oversee the operation of the complex facilities capable of treating 21 types of different polluted flows. In addition, Veolia will also monitor the final overflow quality after blending of both streams and achieve RC Environmental Regulation for the blending of both phase 1 and WWTP outlet.

The Acetyls Complex is a SipChem project located in Jubail Industrial City. The facility, which is named Jubail Acetyls Complex, is a part of SipChem's second phase of development plans. The complex will produce 450,000 tonnes of acetic acid, 330,000 tonnes of vinyl acetate monomer and 345,000 tonnes of carbon monoxide annually once complete.

SipChem manufactures and markets methanol, butanediol, tetrahydrofuran, acetic acid, acetic anhydride, vinyl acetate monomer, as well as carbon monoxide through its various affiliates. It has been listed on the Saudi Stock Market since 2006.
