People living in villages along the Ganga will soon have access to individual household toilets or community sanitary complexes as part of the new government's efforts to clean up the holy river. The toilets will have to be built by states through which the river flows under a drive spearheaded by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation to stop the phenomenon of people defecating on the riverside.

Ghana and The Netherlands are implementing a Water Sanitation and Hygiene Programme to address the deplorable water and sanitation conditions in the country.

The Dutch government funded programme is a 150 million Euros multi-annual project being implemented to improve sanitation and water situation.

Some of the programme beneficiaries are Cape Coast, Elmina, Ga South and Ga West Municipalities.

Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) is co-financing the $400m Asian Development Bank (ADB) Colombo water services programme with $101m.

In October 2012, ADB approved the Greater Colombo Water and Wastewater Management Improvement Investment Program as a multitranche financing facility to improve water and wastewater management services in greater Colombo. Multitranche financing facilities allow phased funding of individual projects when they are ready.
