USDA Funding for Water Quality Study in Ag Watersheds

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announced 21 grants totaling more than $10 million have been awarded to universities to support critical water problems in rural and agricultural watersheds across the United States

The awards were made through NIFA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Water for Agriculture challenge area and the National Integrated Water Quality Program.

Celeste Cantú, General Manager, for the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority (SAWPA) has been working on the crest-to-coast, corner-to- corner Integrated Regional Watershed Management Plan called, One Water One Watershed (OWOW) that addresses all water-related issues, joins all entities and hundreds of stakeholders seeking to create a new vision of sustainability for the Santa Ana River Watershed. The SAWPA's integrated watershed management program and its pioneering activities on water conservation in response to drought have constantly been recognized and appreciated in California and rest of the world. Our water network research team had the pleasure to interview Ms. Cantu and learn more about SAWPA's initiatives.

"Nutrient Trading" for Watersheds

'Nutrient Trading' for Watersheds Proposed in US State House Bill

A bill in the Arkansas House of Representatives would enable organizations to trade nutrients they discharge into a watershed with another organization in exchange for money or some other service.

Springdale Water Utilities Director Heath Ward, a supporter of the bill, said a wastewater utility that's having trouble meeting compliance standards, for instance, could send excess nutrients to another portion of a watershed that's well under permit limits.
