Dr. Wanchang Zhang was promoted as a research scientist of “100 Young Talent Program” sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences, engaged in the research field of Global Changes at Institute for Atmospheric Physics, CAS and full professor at Nanjing University before 2012. Currently he served as a full professor and a research scientist and was promoted as Director of Global Disaster Research Division Center in the Institute of Remote Sensing & Digital Earth (RADI), CAS. Meanwhile he holds the position of a full Professor in the field of Application of Remote Sensing and GIS in Hydrology, Water Resource Management and Environmental Monitoring at Center for Hydro-sciences Research, Nanjing University. Before 1992, he worked at Cold & Arid Regions Environmental & Engineering Research Institute (CAREERI), Chinese Academy of Science, and earned his first master degree in Geography over there. His research interest in that duration was in snow/ice chemistry and ice core science studies for paleo-climate, environmental reconstruction. From 1993 to 1996, he studied and worked aboard with Monbusyu scholarship at the Institute for Hydrospheric-Atmospheric Science and got his second master degree in Hydrospheric- Atmospheric Science at IHAS Special Program sponsored by UNISCO in Nagoya University, Japan, thereafter, he was promoted as a research fellow of Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS), and got his PhD degree in Remote Sensing & GIS at the Department of the Earth & Planetary Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Nagoya University, Japan. Since 2000, Dr. Zhang works as research professor in China and his research interest has also been extended considerably. Current research interests include the water circulation study, Soil Science and environmental monitoring research, hydrological education and application of geo-statistics and modeling to the study and management of water resources. The more specific interests have been focused on:

## Application of remote sensing and GIS to surface radiation and energy budget measurement; 
## Integration of remote sensing and GIS data to be coupled with surface hydro-climatic models for water resource and hydrological process studies;
## Integration of remote sensing and GIS to resolve spatio-temporal scale problems in remote sensing for global change, resource management and Land use/land cover change analyses as well as commercial applications;
## Simulation of basic hydrologic processes in arid and semiarid regions over a range of temporal and spatial scales by identifying scale-dependent dominant processes, describing spatial variability of system states and quantifying the acquired data and model scale-dependent resolution;
## Utilize new technologies (Remote Sensing & GIS) for hydrologic measurements and watershed characterization which accommodate process modeling from point to basin scale;
## Evaluate potential climatic change impacts on semiarid rangeland water resources by investigating the interactions of long-term climatic, hydrologic and vegetation records and land use and management practices over a range of watershed sizes;
## Solutions to the problems associated with the highly variable distribution of water resources and soil properties in time and space, especially in semiarid regions;
## Modeling surface and subsurface hydrologic processes at the hill-slope and watershed scales, evaluating the effect of forest management practices on hydrologic processes and environmental changes;
## Flooding foresting system by integrating GCM with distributed land surface models;
## Development of a Four Dimensional Land Data Assimilation System for being used in surface hydrologic & meteorological studies;
## Monitoring & assessing on drought/flood disasters by using remote sensing & GIS techniques accociated with hydrological modellings.

Dr. Wanchang Zhang has got several academic awards and honors in his research career. He has been the committee number of IEEE from 2005, and was invited as co-chair of many international conferences in recent years. He has published more than 260 peer reviewed domestic and international journal papers till now and served as editorial board number and reviewer in many domestic and international journals. Up to now, he has owned domestic invention potent 6 items as the first inventor and meanwhile he has 6 sets of software registered as the first owner.
