Virtual-water consciousness
19th Aug 2010
The “virtual-water content” is the volume of freshwater used throughout the various steps of the production chain to make a product. For example, a cup of coffee takes about 140 liters of water and 260g of beef take 4030 liters of water. This water could be used in a more sustainable and socially responsible way. The challenge is to bring awareness to the population at large. What would help you to be more conscious and to decrease the amount of virtual water consumption in your daily life?
A sticker on the products with the virtual water content -Colours denoting volume, E.G. Green, Yellow, Red
TV spots providing information on virtual water
Higher prices, taking the virtual water content into account
Phone apps that can be used as a tool to find alternative products with less virtual water content
Governmental subsidies for local agricultural farmers for improving the virtual water content of their production chain
