Impact of virtual water

Countries, that have an excessive import of goods containing large amounts of virtual water, have a strong impact on the global water footprint. This can have a long term negative impact on those countries that have water as a scarce resource. What new policies in your opinion could net water importing countries introduce to have the highest positive impact on their Virtual Water Footprint?


None of it. The only effective way would be to increase the consumption of locally produced goods or those from countries that do not have water as a scarce ressource (e.g. salad from germany instead of lettuce from spain). This can be reached through different ways: policies to encourage local producers, price policies/ taxes that favour local products or those from regions that have enough water,...
