Santos to Treat Narrabri CSG Water

Santos will submit an application later this month of plans to build a water processing plant at the Narrabri Gas Project

The Leewood water treatment plant will eventually produce one megalitre of treated water each day.

Santos's New South Wales manager of energy Peter Mitchley said the water would be used for irrigation and would be treated to the Australian standard for irrigation water.

He said despite ongoing concerns about the quality of AGL's waste water from their Gloucester CSG project, Santos would not be treating the water to drinking quality standard.

"We're taking produced water and putting it through a reverse osmosis unit. We will produce our water to be put out into irrigation, such that meets the standards of irrigation in Australia," he said.

"I don't know of any farmer that takes water, treats it to a drinking water standard and then applies it to a crop of food.

"So why we would take water, treat it to a drinking water standard just because it has the name coal seam gas associated previously and then use that and pass that cost on to the businesses and the Mums and the Dads who use gas for their daily living costs?

"That's beyond me, frankly."

The project is set to produce around 50 tonnes of salt a day and questions are being asked about how this will be handled.

Peter Mitchley said a solution is still being developed.
