Groundwater in India is a critical resource. However, an increasing number of aquifers are reaching unsustainable levels of exploitation. If current trends continue, in 20 years about 60% of all India’s aquifers will be in a critical condition says a World Bank report, Deep Wells and Prudence. This will have serious implications for the sustainability of agriculture, long-term food security, livelihoods, and economic growth. It is estimated that over a quarter of the country’s harvest will be at risk. There is an urgent need to change the status quo.

Despite impressive economic growth over the last
decade, socioeconomic inequalities still prevail in Peru
and poverty remains high in the Sierra (60%). In Latin
America, Peru shows the highest gap in access to
drinking water between poorest and richest quintiles of
population. 61% of the rural population in the Sierra
lacks adequate sanitation and 39% does not have
access to drinking water.

The Sahara Forest Project, which aims to create green oases in desert areas, has signed a deal to build a pilot plant in Aqaba, near the Red Sea in Jordan. With funding from the Norwegian government, the team plans to begin building the pilot plant on a 200,000 square metre site in 2012.

China.org.cn (5/16) reports Beijing is installing recycled water systems and is encouraging its residents to reuse its resources. "According to fresh regulations, all new communities larger than 50,000 square meters and with a daily water consumption rate of more than 150 tons will be required to connect every household to a more sustainable supply. The water will come from one of the capital's five filtering plants or from on-site stations." Beijing is currently in a dry spell, with the average rainfall down 20%.
