  • What is the most important challenge for global sustainable food production?

    10th Mar 2012
Agriculture is responsible for much of the eutrofication of the worlds fresh water ecosystems due to nitrogen and the phosphorous emissions. Addressing different aspects of the food system is thus crucial for the environment. Large scale production and processing methods, it is argued are needed to meet growing needs from population increases. Many believe that humans should have the right to choose what we eat, while others believe that our planet can not sustain consumption profiles of the industrialized nations. Three major areas effect sustainability of our food production, our consumption profiles, our production, and distribution methods. Which do you believe are most important to address in order to maintain global sustainable food production?

If current trends continue, in 20 years about 60% of all India’s aquifers will be in a critical condition says a World Bank report, Deep Wells and Prudence. This will have serious implications for the sustainability of agriculture, long-term food security, livelihoods, and economic growth. It is estimated that over a quarter of the country’s harvest will be at risk. There is an urgent need to change the status quo.
