At the World Water Week in Stockholm, the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is releasing a report presenting the latest results from the ongoing implementation by national partners of its Global Sanitation Fund (GSF).

After nearly 10 years of campaigning, La Parota Dam was officially cancelled. This is an amazing victory for the communities in Mexico – especially the Council of Communal Land Owners and Communities Against Construction of La Parota Dam (CECOP) – who have been fighting the project from the beginning, and the larger movement in Latin America fighting to protect their rivers and human rights.

The water levels in Lake Kinneret – the Sea of Galilee – which is Israel's main freshwater reservoir have experienced a disconcerting drop of 26 inches in three months, according to the Water Authority.

The lake experienced a favorable winter in 2011, but the harsh summer's evaporation rate and regular pumping from the lake have taken their toll.

A new global groundwater assessment reveals that many key aquifers are being depleted faster than they can be replenished, more than offsetting sustainable management elsewhere. Globally, humans are consuming 3.5 times more groundwater than aquifers can support, the study states.

Much of the water extracted in the high-stress areas is used to irrigate farmland, and dry parts of North America and Asia fare the worst. Some parts of India, for instance, are using 54 times more water than the local aquifers can sustain.

Floods and droughts are two leading causes of agricultural losses in Cambodia, where farmers have begun using solar power to manage their water supply and counter the impact of increasingly erratic weather patterns.
