Water Resources Department Proposes to Launch Airborne Surveys to Map Shallow and Deep Aquifers, an Underground Layer of Water-bearing Rocks, in the City

This will mean a big leap forward in data collection for judicious management of ground and surface water resources. The survey that is to be funded by the World Bank will be conducted through a helicopter fitted with electro-magnetic equipment to learn about the aspects of various types of aquifers.

The Ogallala Aquifer across the region has dropped about 325 billion gallons every year for at least the past four decades.

To put that number into perspective, the roughly 1-foot annual drop in the aquifer is more than enough to supply all of Lubbock’s municipal water needs for 25 years.

The series of maps provide a new way to visualise geological data and assess the potential of fracking to contaminate drinking water with methane in England and Wales. 

They show the depth to each shale gas and oil source rock below principal groundwater aquifers, which provide 30% of the UK's drinking water and up to 70% of the drinking water in South East England.

CH2M HILL, a consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, has been awarded a contract by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to provide professional engineering services as part of an $880-million plan to restore the Everglades. Under this contract, CH2M HILL will work in tandem with SFWMD to help enhance the natural region of tropical wetlands in Florida.

The Capital Area Ground Water Conservation Commission has had one task for the past 40 years: to blunt the threat of underground saltwater fouling the Baton Rouge area’s prized fresh-water supplies.
