Water crisis has reached two of the largest hospitals in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, where many key medical facilities have been operating largely without running water for most of the year.
An estimated 17,000 residences were spared losing access to water when the city announced they were placing a moratorium on the shutoffs on July 21. But the shutoffs resumed on August 26 and thousands more households are at risk of losing the most fundamental of human rights.
In a war, anything can be a weapon. In a particularly ruthless war, such as the conflict that has been raging in Syria for more than three years, those weapons are often turned against civilians, making any semblance of normal life impossible. Such is the case, experts say, with the way the nation’s water supply is being manipulated to inflict suffering on the population.
Equity challenges in water and sanitation continue as efforts to ensure universal access intensifies. Perhaps, right-based approach could solve problem of equity.
