Researchers in the US have built a prototype device which they say can generate electricity from waste water.
The team at Pennsylvania State University says the technology would simultaneously treat the water.
They suggest the process could be adopted in developing countries, providing clean water and power for homes.

Recycling waste water to prevent a water crisis in Jordan
In order to fight water scarcity, NGOs and two German universities teamed up to implement new strategies on how to make better use of waste water. Currently less than ten percent of the water in Jordan is being recycled.
One fundamental task for the project is reprocessing water that has already been used. Currently, less than a tenth of the water in Jordan is being recycled. Most used water is drained into cesspools, which leads to problems, said Dr. Roland Müller, head of the Center for Environmental Biotechnology in Leipzig.
