The French Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOM) has piloted the Marine and River Dune Dynamics series after its initiation in 1998 during a meeting of the North Sea Hydrographic Commission. Following the successes of Lille (France), Twente (the Netherlands) and Leeds (UK), this conference will be held in the medieval city of Bruges (Belgium), on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 April 2013, with a field trip on Wednesday 17 April.

The International Riversymposium is the world’s leading river management conference. This year’s event will explore the intricately linked pressures on rivers and waterways as the world’s urban population continues to grow and expand.

This international conference that focuses on rivers will allow scientists, environment managers and operational actors from Europe and from all over the world to:

- Learn about the complexity and diversity of the rivers; and
- Share their experiences in terms of research and actions, implementation of local politics of watershed districts in particular for European examples

The objective is to promote exchanges on rivers between scientists and environment managers.

The conference will discuss legal and regulatory aspects, in addition to more technical problems, involving the design, construction, maintenance, monitoring and control of urban water systems.
