This well supported annual event brings together leakage experts with the supply chain to explore new technologies, processes and gain information on new developments that can help the industry achieve long term sustainable leakage management.
With opinion continuing to be divided over the feasibility of the UK's renewable energy targets - which require 15% of all energy to be produced from renewable sources by 2020 - this seminar will provide a timely opportunity to consider both the progress that is being made and new thinking that is emerging on successfully achieving the Government's aims.
The 2012 Congress will allow the presentation of a wide variety of new and evolving hydrogeological issues and opportunities that include:
Energy and Climate Change
Groundwater Resource Analysis and Management
Groundwater / Surface Water Interaction (Ecohydrology)
Groundwater Quality
Karst Hydrogeology
General Hydrogeology and Geotechnique
The NCCR Climate, Switzerland's Centre of Excellence in Climate and Climate Impact Research, invites young scientists to join leading climate researchers in a scenic southern Swiss Alpine setting for keynote lectures, workshops and poster sessions on the occasion of the 11th NCCR Climate Summer School 2012.
The Riparian Conference will bring together, scientists, policy makers, and economists to discuss the very latest national and global issues concerning the management and sustainability of riparian ecosystems. It will serve as a forum for the exchange of timely topics such as riparian ecosystem responses to flooding, the influence of bio-energy production on riparian function, the impacts of climate change on riparian ecosystem sustainability, and the effects of green house gas emissions in riparian ecosystems.
•The programme will be separated into clearly defined ½ day modules, each featuring international and local experts and concluding with a facilitated panel discussion with thespeakers from that module.
• Modules are structured so as to be attractive to all stakeholders, but will allow people tochoose not to attend all sessions without losing any coherence, and CPD credits will also bestructured accordingly.
Module 1 - Water & Climate Change
Module 2 - Acid Mine Drainage - Finding consensus and proposing action
In recent decades, climate change has uncoupled glacial melt cycles in the Tibetan Plateau—which is warming up on average two degrees Celsius faster than the rest of the world—from the traditional agricultural season, causing water shortages in April and May when Ladakhis typically begin sowing seeds for the summer season. If the villagers don't sow during this critical window, there is no crop that year.

This YWP conference gives you an excellent chance to meet colleagues from all over the world, to share knowledge and experience, to learn new ideas and approaches related to water issues. It is a great opportunity for networking and making contacts with water professionals from different countries and different scientific fields.
In 2012 the YWP conference will focus on one of the most crucial issues in the contemporary water management – new technologies in water sector. This topic is essential for many countries and regions of CIS and Eastern Europe.
The European Environment Agency (EEA) said that the continent's water resources were under pressure and things were getting worse.
It said limited supplies were being wasted, and nations had to implement existing legislation more effectively.
The EEA presented its findings at the 6th World Water Forum in Marseille.
"The critical thing for us is that we are seeing an increasing number of regions where river basins, because of climate change, are experiencing water scarcity," said EEA executive director Jacqueline McGlade.
Overall themes for ENVIRO 2012 include:
Materials efficiency (incl. energy/carbon)
Technology and innovation
Leadership, risk and opportunity
Thoughtful consumption
Conference overview
For the past two decades, Peter Gleick has earned a reputation as a nationally known expert on water and climate issues, winning a MacArthur "genius award," penning a long list of scientific articles and testifying before Congress.
But over the past two days, the 55-year-old Berkeley resident has found himself at the center of a national maelstrom of his own making: using a false name to obtain confidential documents from a pro-industry think tank known for minimizing the risks of global warming.
ReplyConcerns about both climate change and safe energy supply in the post-Fukushima world have given a new impulse to one of Switzerland’s specialities: hydroelectricity.
It is not only newly-sparked fears about nuclear power that are prompting a rethink about hydroelectricity. Climate change is having a dramatic impact on Switzerland’s mountains, and as the glaciers melt, new lakes are being formed. These are being seen as both an opportunity and a danger.

Recent decades have seen emergent issues that bear potentially massive risks for the long-term trajectory of coastal environments and the uses we make of them. These issues have raised awareness, and in some cases, motivated investment of much funding and research and management efforts. It seems timely, at a time of economic constraints, and a time when too many issues demand international attention, to take a hard look at the evidentiary basis, current data, and future predictions surrounding these issues.
How many mangroves does it take to offset a transatlantic flight? What consumer actions can we take to reduce damage to rainforests?
Answers to these questions and many more are provided by a new iPhone application launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at the Eye on Earth summit in Abu Dhabi.
The UNEP application draws attention to the critical role played by ecosystems such as salt marshes, mangroves, tropical forests and seagrasses in tackling climate change.
A 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Ohio on New Year's Eve did not occur naturally and may have been caused by high-pressure liquid injection related to oil and gas exploration and production, an expert hired by the state of Ohio said on Tuesday.
Ohio's Department of Natural Resources on Sunday suspended operations at five deep well sites in Youngstown, Ohio, where the injection of water was taking place, while they evaluate seismological data from a rare quake in the area.

Conference focuses on air, water and soil monitoring and innovative processes for sustainable resource management, it is expected that the environmental issues and status of resource will be discussed during proceedings of the conference.
The ASC provides an opportunity for policy makers, scholars and security analysts, both from India and abroad, to share their views on the security challenges facing the continent.
The International Mine Water Association Annual Conference 2012 themes are:
Maximizing water values affected by mining
Protecting and conserving mine water resources
Maximizing utility of waters produced by mining
A global legally binding deal on climate change is likely to be off the table, at least "for now", the United Nations secretary-general has said in his most downbeat assessment of the talks.
Assessing the nine days of negotiations at Durban so far, Ban Ki-moon told delegates: "It may be true, as many say: the ultimate goal of a comprehensive and binding climate change agreement may be beyond our reach – for now."
